Synopsis Draft

Film Studies

Storyboard Planning and Synopsis

Genre – Drama
Story Type – The Gift Taken Away
Codes and Conventions – Dark lighting, night life
Protagonists – The band: Jake (The Lead Guitarist), Kyle (The Drummer), Austin (The Vocalist), Joe (The Bassist) and Matt (The Rhythm Guitarist).
Antagonists – Alcohol and Drugs
Synopsis

A band from the UK, start to make it big and decide that it would be best for their career if they move to the States to gain a larger fan base. After months of touring they finally get there and become a widely known band in their particular scene. However this leads to pressure on the band to keep their fame and skills but when Kyle and Joe give in to the influence of drugs and alcohol the band start to gain a bad reputation and lose their respect from across the music industry. This is what the gift taken away is in my story, their skill individually and in a band. They must face tough decisions in order to pursue their dreams. The main plot twist is when Jake and Austin start arguing and get into a fight which results in Joe taking Jakes side and Kyle and Matt taking Austin’s side. This is where in the story I think I will start my storyboard, as it will tell the tale of how the band manage to battle death and pull their act together and gain back the skills they once had in order to continue living the dream in their band without having to kick out any of the band members and regain respect from around the music industry.

I have been influenced by many things while planning my storyboard. For example I would have to say that my main influence was the band Asking Alexandria. Their self-destructive lifestyles inspired me to tell my tale of a band falling apart due to these issues and what they must do to keep going as a band.

Key Iconography of the Drama Genre

Film Studies

Real life issues and problems are iconographic of the drama genre because it is something that the audience can relate to and understand. This makes the audience always be able to understand the story line of the film as they can relate to what is happening and be sympathetic towards the protagonist. The Story line of drama films are often told like a journey. The classic everything is okay then something goes wrong which results in the disturbance in the film and the the equilibrium of the film where everything is resolved and leads to a happy ending. A happy ending is used in almost every drama film. This is because the audience believe the story more and understand that real life issues can be overcome. Otherwise the audience would not be satisfied with the ending if the protagonist did not resolve his problem in the film. Therefore a happy ending is essential to the drama genre and is why happy endings are used in almost all drama films. Sound exaggerated is often exaggerated in drama films. This is so the sounds of movement or a person sighing is heard and understood by the audience. This is because drama as a genre is very dramatic and therefore the sound in a drama film needs to be so that the audience or spectator knows how to feel.

My choosen sequence

Film Studies

The sequence that I have choosen to do for my storyboard is the confrentation part of the narrative. My 25 shots will include the band practicing and the vocalist Austin is not playing up to standard. That is when they start arguing and become aggravated with each other and start fighting. This will be the disruption in my narrative. I have choosen to so this section of my story because it is the main plot twist of my story so I thought that it would be the best scene to pick.

My storyboard will start with the band meeting up and going to their practice room. There is a minor argument on the way there because Austin admits to the group that he has recently started taking drugs and thinks that he has a growing dependancy for alcohol but due to his honesty the band support him and carry on. However when the band are practicing Jake and Matt start to become increasingly annoyed with Austin as his voice is getting worse and worse which means that he will be damaging the overall skill of the band. It then gets to a point where they can't take it anymore and lash out at Austin and a fight breaks out. My storyboard will finish on Jake and Matt leaving the practice room on a cliff hanger of the disruption/confrentation of my story.
